Our Maths Curriculum

At Yew Tree Primary School we value the importance of teaching approaches that give pupils the best chance in securing a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and a varied fluency in applying them.

At Yew Tree Primary School, teachers and staff strive to deliver both depth and breadth and ensure that pupils grasp the fundamental concepts that will unlock the door to mastery. We strive to teach Maths across the wider curriculum therefore giving children the chance to apply their skills outside the Maths lesson.

We also want pupils to have a Growth Mindset ‘can do’ attitude by being mathematically resilient, determined in the face of a challenge, cooperative and creative and, most importantly, having a positive attitude to making mistakes and seeking solutions.

We use the White Rose scheme to support our teaching.

MATHS PROGRESSION FROM YN TO Y6

99 CLUB

The 99 club is a scheme we use at Yew Tree which aims to raise standards in maths by encouraging children to improve their mental calculations when attempting quick-fire multiplication and division problems.

Children from Y2 – Y4 complete a short 99 Club quiz each week to help build confidence, speed and automatic recall of their times tables. Children may stay on the same club for a number of weeks while they practise and become more secure.

We send the quiz sheets home each week so you can see which tables your child is currently working on and celebrate their progress. There is no expectation to complete any homework from these sheets — they are simply being shared for your information and so you can support as necessary.
