Hello! My name is Miss Horsley and I am the Nursery teacher. This is my sixth year here at Yew Tree Primary School and I absolutely love working in the foundation stage. Being your child’s first teacher is a big responsibility and I feel very proud that I can be part of this big step for you and your child. I take the role very seriously and will do my very best to ensure that they are safe, cared for and happy.

All children are special and unique! We want them to love school and we want to make our classroom a place of laughter and learning! Our Early Years Setting provides the children with a stimulating, exciting and challenging curriculum in a caring and supportive environment. 

In the EYFS we love being creative, a little bit messy and a little bit noisy, but don't worry - it's all to help us with our learning! We do lots of singing, dancing, playing and creating. Children have the chance to work with their teachers as well as find out things on their own. I have lots of exciting activities planned for the busy year ahead, and cannot wait to share these experiences with the children.

We are excited to welcome you to the Yew Tree family and we are really looking forward to working with you and your child this year. We really value your support and the role you play in your child’s education, so if you have any queries or questions, please do not hesitate to come in and see us.

Curriculum Information

All of the work we do in Nursery goes towards developing your child in the 7 key areas of learning; Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language, Physical Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design.

All of our work in these areas will be documented by photographs, mark making, artwork and other pieces of evidence on Tapestry in Online Learning Journals. You can find more information about Tapestry below. Your child will work in small groups each day completing guided maths and writing activities, as well as a daily Super Sounds (phonics) session to develop their reading and listening skills. These activities will develop key skills for your child, as well as being fun and interesting to engage them with their learning.

We also follow a 'creative curriculum', which is a thematic approach to delivering aspects of the curriculum. We have a different topic each half-term, and provide lots of stimulating activities for your child to choose and explore based around this topic.

Sunshine and Sunflowers

In the Sunshine and Sunflowers project the children will explore their local environment and see how it has changed throughout the year. They will grow flowers, fruit and vegetables in the garden area. They will learn how to care for plants and animals, identifying some different types. They will take part in outdoor learning activities and find out how to stay safe in the sun.

Shadows and Reflections

In the Shadows and Reflections project the children will learn about natural phenomena, including shadows, reflections and echoes. They will find out how shadows are formed and how they change shape and size through the day. They will explore how different materials and surfaces reflect light.

Tapestry is a secure Online Learning Journal to record photos, videos observations and comments, in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, to build up a record of your child’s experiences during their time with us. This system allows us to work with parents and carers to share information and record the children’s play and learning in and outside of the classroom.
